Act IV handout due Tues Oct 21st

Published by schiffatvhs under Uncategorized

Directions: I would like you to answer all of the following questions. Please do the following before you respond:

·        Read the prompt twice.

·        Circle what you think the actual ideas you need to respond to are.

·        Number those ideas in the order you’ll respond.

·        Make sure you answer in complete sentences.

·        Make sure you have 8-10 sentences minimum.

·        Use at least one quote, each response, from the novel to support your answer.

·        Only use concrete details (facts) to support your argument.

1. Describe 2 examples of situational irony, and explain what makes each ironic.

2. The Crucible is a story about powerless individuals who overthrow a town full of strict religious values, as well as a clear social chain of command. How do the witch trials empower individuals who were previously powerless? What is the outcome for the protagonist and the antagonist? Does anyone who rose to power still have it?

 3. A crucible is defined as a severe test. Write a response discussing the significance of the title. What is “the crucible” within the play and how does it bring about change or reveal an individual’s true character? (hint, think John Proctor/ Rev. Hale!)

4. Explain the significance of John Proctor’s quote, “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul: leave me my name!” (Proctor, 240).

Essay Question Response Notes

Published by schiffatvhs under Uncategorized

Respond to the following:

John Proctor boasts about his wife’s sense of honesty as he reveals he is an adulterer. What is ironic about John’s sentiments to the court and why would this situation be unfair, even if Elizabeth had told the truth?

How to write a timed response and how to complete worksheet questions!

         Read the whole question.

Circle the portions of the question that you think you need to respond to.

         Number them: idea 1, idea 2, idea 3, etc…

Answer each question thoroughly. Use complete sentences.

Use actual facts to present your argument! These will later become concrete details in your essays.

What You Should NEVER Do in a Response.

         Don’t use “I think”.

Don’t use the word “probably” or “maybe”- if you’re arguing a point, you KNOW you’re right.

Always write in present tense, not past tense.

Don’t make up hypothetical’s, stick to the facts.

Now Write the Question and circle what you think needs to be responded to (Hint, probably more than one circle is needed):

John Proctor boasts about his wife’s sense of honesty as he reveals he is an adulterer. What is ironic about John’s sentiments to the court and why would this situation be unfair, even if Elizabeth had told the truth?

Practice Question Circled (Did you get this?)

John Proctor boasts about his wife’s sense of honesty as he reveals he is an adulterer. (What is ironic about John’s sentiments to the court) and (why would this situation be unfair), (even if Elizabeth had told the truth)?

How you might respond:

John Proctor boasts about his wife’s sense of honesty as he reveals he is an adulterer.

What is ironic about John’s sentiments to the court

Respond in two to three sentences about irony. What kind of irony is this? What is at stake when John allows himself to be honest with his community?

and why would this situation be unfair,

Respond in two to three sentences about how the society/Puritans dealt with fairness in their courtrooms. Discuss hypocrisy and lack of evidence.

even if Elizabeth had told the truth?

Respond in two to three sentences about the consequences.

Now, using what you know… respond to the question and look at the difference in quality!:

John Proctor boasts about his wife’s sense of honesty as he reveals he is an adulterer. What is ironic about John’s sentiments to the court and why would this situation be unfair, even if Elizabeth had told the truth?
